Spectacular videos

As I'm sure none of you has missed noticing, MGMT has one of the most spectacular, fantasy-triggering and goofy images of 2008. Which, this far, has been obvious even to an almost literally physical level (check out the interactive video available for download at their myspace!). To start of this music video commentary I need to strongly emhpasize what an amazing musical journey and vivid song that Time To Pretend is. There's so much going on in the beginning track of Oracular Spectacular: emotionally, atmopsherically, humoristically, instrumentally and aesthetically, that a video for it seemed like one of the hardest projects to pull off in the music video year of 2008.

And to be honest, I knew it all the while, ever since I the first time was awed by Time To Pretend til the first watch of the video ended, that it's the kind of song that is best experienced in one's mind without any constructed visual means. However, it doesn't mean that the video captures some of the song's vitality. Copious amounts of cheesy effects and cut-paste jobs in a seemingly never-ending psychedelic trip of colours and imagery makes a rather impressive effect despite its simplicity. But yes, it can't be helped that a cheap computerized production also drags the credibility down for this majestic song's vacillating video representative. What the creator's shall be credited for, however, is that they covered nearly all aspects of MGMT's Peter-Pan-children-meets Lord-of-The-Flies tribal stylistic theme, which I childishly cherish about the band.

MGMT - Time To Pretend

The stylistic theme ought to not let me down in the Electric Feel video either. The band gather up a few of their tribal mates to have a funky party in magic forest in the kingdom of Psychedelia. The only thing I'm missing is some more soulful funkiness. And there's not much sexy stuff in it either, and that is what the song is all about. In general, I think the video is missing that electric feel. You know, the punch, the edge, the goofy innovation that MGMT and this song require. But it's eye-candy for sure.

MGMT - Electric Feel

Not to mention the crappy goof-ball version of the Electric Feel video. Those who have bought the album are now lucky to be able to put the disc into the computer and happily do their own little joyous live colour/pattern/graphics edit as they are watching it. The interactive video can also be downloaded here!
